A letter to Colorado Nonprofit Leaders of Color on Election Day

Dear Colorado Community Leaders of Color,

On this 2024 Election Day, I wanted to reach out and acknowledge the unique challenges and opportunities we face as leaders in our communities. This election season brings heightened attention to the issues we champion. As leaders from and working in historically marginalized communities, we understand the election results may temporarily shift the influence and support of our collective efforts for justice, equality, and equity. However, we know true change demands a steady and strategic approach to continue creating positive, lasting impact.

While elections can stir emotions that bring both encouragement and trials, we must stay focused on our long-term missions. Here are a few guiding thoughts as we navigate this post-election season together:

1. Stay Calm and Grounded: The fast pace of the news cycle and political discourse can be overwhelming. Taking the time to reflect, breathe, and stay grounded will help us maintain clarity and resilience.

2. Prepare for the Long-Term: Elections can provide new opportunities, yet real systemic change requires consistent advocacy and strategic action, regardless of election outcomes. Let’s keep our eye on the future, aligning our goals with long-term impact for the communities we serve.

3. Engage Wisely: While civic engagement is crucial, remember to leverage your platforms thoughtfully. The voices we uplift and the messages we share should encourage constructive dialogue, empowering our communities with accurate information and hope.

4. Plan and Protect Your Resources: As funding and policies shift in response to the election, be proactive about budgeting your organization’s resources. Strategic planning, particularly around finances, will position you to respond confidently to changing circumstances.

Please see a list of additional resources below. You are welcome to share these resources.

Let’s remember that our communities look to us for strength, vision, and hope. Together, we can move forward with resilience, working toward the brighter, more equitable future we envision.

In partnership and solidarity,
